Upcoming PC games

upcoming games

What are the best upcoming PC games to keep an eye on this year and next? Hope, anticipation, agony and elation – it’s the endless cycle of emotions we go through during the annual PC release schedule.

Related: the latest games released on PC.

Year in, year out, games – via Steam and otherwise – are produced in such varying degrees of quality that no announcement is destined for certain success. Masterpieces are released alongside utter disasters, franchises are born while others dwindle and occasionally – so very occasionally – a game actually lives up to our expectations.

Upcoming PC games Q1 2018

Kingdom Come: Deliverance

Subscribe to PCGamesN on YouTube

Ever wondered what Skyrim without magic and cat people would look like? Wonder no more, because Warhorse Studios are in the process of making a medieval RPG set in 1403. The game promises to have historically accurate armour, weapons and combat techniques, and is intended to allow the player to become whoever they want – rogue, warrior or bard. Even more so when Kingdom Come mods get going.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance release date: February 13, 2018

Age of Empires: Definitive Edition

upcoming games Age of Empire Definitive Edition

Few RTS games have been as widely played as Age of Empires. Enjoyed by casual and hardcore fans of the genre alike, all should be itching to dive into this remaster, which will be released to coincide with the original game’s 20th anniversary.

All of the game’s assets have been reworked and the number of poses for each unit doubled. There will also be improved AI and a modernised UI, as well as more commands, lobbies, and other quality-of-life improvements.

Age of Empires: Definitive Edition release date: February 20, 2018

Into the Breach

Into the Breach release date

The FTL folks are back, and if that’s not enough to get you excited… well, for one thing, there might be something wrong with you. That aside, it’s an isometric turn-based strategy game where you must save the Earth from various kaiju-sized threats by commanding humongous robots. It looks extremely rad.

Into the Breach release date: February 27, 2018

Final Fantasy XV

upcoming pc games Final Fantasy XV

Final Fantasy XV “has advanced a generation” over its console versions, according to game director, Hajime Tabata. We would certainly hope so: the game came out in November 2016 on console, so some time has passed. Along with 4K and multiplayer support, here is everything we know about Final Fantasy XV: Windows edition.

Final Fantasy XV release date: March 6, 2018

Surviving Mars

Surviving Mars

The Tropico devs are back, trading the Caribbean for one planet over, and disgruntled island citizens for slightly unprepared colonists. Strategy masters Paradox are publishing, and it’s rare they’ll let something subpar out the door. One to watch as we head through 2017.

Surviving Mars release date: March 15, 2018

Ni No Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom

Ni no kuni 2 release date delay

After a short delay, Ni No Kuni 2 is now the first semi-large release of 2018. If you’re unfamiliar, it’s a Ghibli-styled JRPG that blew socks off in its first iteration a few years ago on the consoles. This is set hundreds of years later, using similar themes and places, but likely as good a jumping on point as any. Good, too, since the first isn’t coming to PC any time soon.

Ni No Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom release date: March 23, 2018

A Way Out

upcoming games a way out

From the folks behind Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons comes a co-op adventure that can only be played that way. A Way Out gives you one character each and a prison to break out of. It goes as far as letting one character move around while another might be in a cinematic. It’s a very cool idea, and Brothers was good enough to make us believe this will be worth keeping an eye on.

A Way Out release date: March 23, 2018

Far Cry 5

Subscribe to PCGamesN on YouTube

Far Cry leaves the mountains and islands behind to head to middle America, Montana to be precise, and deal with some extreme fundamentalists and their very angry dog. Expect more tidbits as we head to release, but here’s info on the Far Cry 5 story, setting, and everything else we know.

Far Cry 5 release date: March 27, 2018

Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire

Pillars of Eternity

Pillars 2 is on the way and that’s about all we know. Obsidian have been working on it since at least early 2016 according to interviews, but they’ve kept quiet about exactly how it’s changing. We do know it will be in an entirely different section of the world, featuring fresh characters and a different plot. More to follow in early 2018, we guess.

Pillars of Eternity 2 release date: April 3, 2018

A Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia

Subscribe to PCGamesN on YouTube

Total War Sagas are spin-off series of the main Creative Assembly titles that focus on “flashpoint” moments in history, the first of which being Thrones of Britannia

In this first Total War Saga, it is the year 878, and the Vikings have established themselves on the British mainland, but the native kings are yet to be overthrown. For Total War and fans of strategy games generally, this is an upcoming game to watch out for.

A Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia release date: April 19, 2018

Crackdown 3

Crackdown 3

How do you make explosions even more explosive? You get the cloud to compute them. That’s the plan for Crackdown 3, the seven-years-late sequel to one of the Xbox’s most popular games. Destructible environments in a sandbox city are the setup, but beyond that we haven’t seen much more since the reveal in 2015.

Crackdown 3 release date: Spring 2018

Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner – Mars

Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner - Mars upcoming pc games

In case you missed Konami’s adored hack-and-slash and third-person shooter mash-up when it initially launched on PS2 in 2003, Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner is coming to PC in 2018. So, what’s it all about? It is 2174 and your job is to take down the evil BAHRAM military organisation, who are suppressing society across both Earth and Mars. To help you on that mission, you control a powerful mech called Jehuty. The enhanced edition also adds 4K and VR support to the sci-fi action game, so it shouldn’t look too shabby for a 15-year-old console game.

Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner – Mars: Spring 2018

State of Decay 2

State of Decay 2

The definition of a cult indie hit, State of Decay was a lot of great ideas that were well implemented and not locked in early access for a thousand years. It did well too, managing to garner quite the gaggle of fans that appreciated a group zombie survival where things actually worked. The sequel wants to do all that better and could be one of the semi-surprise hits of the year if it nails it.

State of Decay 2 release date: Spring 2018

Klei’s latest is an RPG, and that should be enough to get you excited on its own. Griftlands is built on the concept of tradable resources, but little else has been revealed beyond the trailer. Klei have basically nailed everything they’ve ever tried though, bringing originality and quality to whatever they touch.

Griftlands release date: Early 2018

Paladins: Battlegrounds

upcoming pc games Paladins Battlegrounds

Hi-Rez Studios are jumping on the bandwagon with Paladins: Battlegrounds. And here we were thinking reskins of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds could not get any more brazen than Epic Games’s Fortnite Battle Royale.

If you paid attention to the game in 2017, you will know what to expect from Paladins: Battlegrounds, more or less. The twist, though, is that instead of an all-against-all setup, this upcoming PC game is built around teams, made up of supports, tanks, fighters, and assassins. Paladins: Battlegrounds, like Epic’s aping of the battle royale format, will be a free update to the main game when it fully releases in 2018.

Paladins: Battlegrounds release date: Q1 2018

Metal Gear Survive

Metal Gear Survive

Konami are doing another full Metal Gear game, and this time, they’re doing it without Hideo Kojima. Fan reactions are as to be expected, but at least it’s suitably silly – rock zombies, time travel, alternate dimensions, portals through space, time, and structure. It’s co-op in nature and likely won’t bear much resemblance to what’s come before.

Metal Gear Survive release date: Early 2018

Battletech is back(letech), meaning we get to watch giant mechs beat each other up all over again. Created by notable Kickstarter success story Harebrained Schemes, of Shadowrun fame, it’s progressing at speed with regular updates and should be out in 2017.

Battletech release date: Early 2018

Upcoming PC games Q2 2018

Vampyr Combat

The first game for feels-central developer Dontnod to release after Life is Strange is, obviously, about consuming the flesh of the living for sustenance. Vampyr casts you as a recently-vampirised doctor in 1918, just as Spanish Flu is really starting to mess Europe up. London is the setting, dark is the tone, and surviving is the plan, while trying not to destroy all sense of civilisation in Britain’s capital. Good luck.

Vampyr release date: June 5, 2018

Dark Souls Remastered

upcoming games dark souls remastered

When Dark Souls first landed on PC in 2016 it was not in the best of states. With technical issues and resolution problems and much more, it took third-party patches to get the game running well. Now, thankfully, a new team is handling a remastered version  of the notoriously challenging action-RPG.

Rumours have it that Dark Souls Remastered will come packing the excellent Artorias of the Abyss DLC with an “improved frame rate and resolution from the original.” If this means 60fps, it seems PC fans will finally get the port that this special game deserves. Prepare to die all over again.

Dark Souls Remastered release date: May 25, 2018

Sunless Skies

Sunless Sea

Here’s an equally dark follow-up and this time it’s to the rather good Sunless Sea. Failbetter went back to Kickstarter for this one and did exceptionally well. Fully funded within four hours, Sunless Skies will almost certainly be a total pleasure to fans of the studio. There’s plenty of information over on the Kickstarter and a development roadmap points to early access in late 2017.

Sunless Skies release date: May 2018

System Shock 3

System Shock 3 release date

The other side of the System Shock development split, System Shock 3 is likely a long, long way off. We know Warren Spector is involved and… that’s about it. Otherside Entertainment are doing the actual production, with Spector now there as studio director – we’re expecting to hear more from them through 2017.

System Shock 3 release date: Q2 2018

Jurassic World Evolution

upcoming games jurassic world evolution

We’ve been watching human beings make mistakes with dinosaurs and theme parks since 1993, but now we get to make those mistakes ourselves with Jurassic World Evolution. Presumably, considering the summer 2018 release date, there’s going to be some sort of tie-in with the Jurassic World film sequel, but Evolution looks to partly be a theme park sim in a similar vein to Planet Coaster – it looks like you can create your own attractions and organise your own park before it inevitably gets destroyed.

Jurassic World Evolution release date: Summer 2018

The Banner Saga 3

Subscribe to PCGamesN on YouTube

For fans of turn-based RPGs that appreciate an attractive, hand-drawn art-style with their role-playing, we come bearing good news: The Banner Saga is back with a third game. Unfortunately, there is also bad news: this will be the last in the series.

The video above is the first in what will be a series of character profiles, this one concentrates on Varl loyalist Fasolt. We find him in something of a quandary, weighing up whether to help or hinder humanity as the end of the world looms.

The Banner Saga 3 release date: Summer 2018

Steel Rats

upcoming games steel rats

Steel Rats is a bike adventure game that blends Trials with Inside, which would be excellent if we were any good at it. This really is not a game for casuals: messing around on your Harley Davidson-esque motorbike in this dark, dieselpunk world feels like learning to ride all over again.

From the developers behind Urban Trial Freestyle, Steel Rats allows you to choose one of four greaser gang characters to save the industrial Coastal City from an invasion of dastardly robots. The Blade Runner and Tron influences are clear throughout; Steel Rats promises to be a treat.

Steel Rats release date: Summer 2018

We Happy Few

We Happy Few release date

Already in Early Access and making quite a stormer of it, We Happy Few aims to mix BioShock and survival games into, presumably, some sort of world-devouring omni-game. Set in an alternate universe where drugs are all that keep the British population in check, it’s horror, humour, survival, and story all wrapped into one. There’s also going to be a We Happy Few film, for some reason.

We Happy Few release date: Summer 2018

The Crew 2

Cars! But not just cars. That’s the concept of The Crew 2 as it adds biplanes and boats to the formula, along with the usual massive collection of cars and other road vehicles. You’ll even switch between them on the fly, weirdly.

The Crew 2 release date: Mid 2018

Upcoming PC games Q3 2018

The Gardens Between

upcoming games the gardens between

With colourful art direction and Braid-style time manipulation puzzles, The Gardens Between looks like an excellent addition to your indie game collection

As Arina and Frendt, you will journey through dreamworlds, solving the mind-bending temporal puzzles in your way. Over the course of your adventure, more about the pair’s friendship are revealed as the theme of childhood is explored.

The Gardens Between release date: Q3 2018

Metro Exodus

Subscribe to PCGamesN on YouTube

Despite running out of books, Metro isn’t done. It’s heading outside, for a year-round story – but it isn’t in an open world, instead taking place around several massive, interconnected levels. It was also one of the prettiest games at E3 and has giant zombie bears. Hooray.

Metro Exodus release date: Autumn 2018

Monster Hunter: World

Subscribe to PCGamesN on YouTube

The PC is getting a Monster Hunter game with all the bells and whistles you’d hope for. Beyond that, we don’t know a tonne beyond it will follow the series formula – co-op monster-smashing with big swords and bigger enemies. The PC version has no specific release date, Capcom say that it will be “at a later date” compared to console early 2018.

Monster Hunter release date: Autumn 2018

Skull & Bones

Subscribe to PCGamesN on YouTube

Black Flag and For Honor meet in the middle for PvP boating, pirating, and cannoning. With a very familiar UI and control mechanism for anyone that played Assassin’s Creed’s seabound family member, it’s got some strange scoring mechanisms and isn’t all about wiping out the enemy team.

Skull & Bones release date: Fall 2018

Upcoming PC games Q4 2018

Ashes of Creation

The latest in the long line of Kickstarter MMOs, but one that has inspired enough people to blow past its $750,000 asking price, reaching beyond the $3.2 million mark. The wait for a full release could be massive. Hopefully it’s worth it for those dropping cash.

Ashes of Creation release date: December, 2018

Anno 1800

Subscribe to PCGamesN on YouTube

We’re excited to have a go at some more city builder goodness with Anno 1800. This entry in the series, as the name makes quite clear, is going to have a Victorian flavour, which is a welcome change after the futuristic outing we had with Anno 2205. We don’t know much yet, but expect lots of ships, smog, and vintage dresses in between now and winter next year.

Anno 1800 release date: Winter 2018

Phoenix Point

Phoenix Point Julian Gollop David Kaye X-Com Funded fig.co

The next game from original X-Com creator Julian Gollop looks, well, quite a lot like X-Com. It’s closest to Terror from the Deep in aesthetic and plays like a more complex version of his classic. If you’re well into the resurgence of turn-based strategy and tactics games, you should be excited. And ready to wait…

Phoenix Point release date: Late 2018

Upcoming PC games TBC 2018

BioMutant came from pretty much nowhere, but its vibrant and mysterious world revealed in its initial trailer has made us embrace it with open arms. So far, we’ve seen some typical RPG fare and character creation screens, but we do also know BioMutant has a karma system and a variety of attractive worlds from arid deserts to snowy mountaintops.

BioMutant release date: TBC 2018

Xenonauts 2

Xenonauts 2 aliens

XCOM’s indie cousin takes a lot from the original games – differentiating it from the smaller squad sizes of the modern-day efforts. Xenonauts 2 was announced with a splash page and little else in 2016, and has had work done on it quietly ever since. But builds are now readily available from the official site and to prove it’s at a seriously playable point.

Xenonauts 2 release date: TBC 2018

Valve have another game coming out – which, being made by Valve, means it’s certain to be excellent. Revealed at The International, Artifact is a digital card game set in the Dota 2 universe. You’ll play across three boards with each player taking control of five heroes, playing them down lanes with spawning creeps. Heroes, cards, and spells will be repurposed for this collectible card game – obviously, we’re very excited.

Artifact release date: TBC 2018

Untitled Goose Game

Subscribe to PCGamesN on YouTube

Developers House House are known for their zany titles, such as the curious wrestling game Push Me Pull You. Next up is a game about a sociopathic goose.

The game doesn’t have a name yet but that doesn’t matter. All you need to be convinced you need this game in your life is the pre-alpha footage above. This untitled goose game appears to be built around two interactions: honking, and grasping things with your beak. It’s certainly, er, something.

Untitled Goose Game release date: TBC 2018

After a well-received reveal at The Game Awards 2016, Dauntless entered a period of hibernation while the brains behind it put the free-to-play Monster Hunter-esque game together. After good showings at PAX and other shows, and with a growing community, it’s got a shot to be one of the bigger games of the year.

Dauntless release date: TBC 2018

Project Hospital

upcoming games Project Hospital

Remember Theme Hospital? Developer Oxymoron Games does, too. In fact, they are pretty brazen about their version, Project Hospital, and how similar it is to its inspiration. Oxymoron Games claim that it will “cure your nostalgia.”

But you won’t just be running a hospital: this upcoming game will charge you with building your own medical empire. Since you will be juggling the needs of patients and the power supply of our hospitals, we admire your commitment to the Hippocratic Oath.

Project Hospital release date: TBC 2018

Darksiders 3

Via the original team (who’ve since made the rather good VR Souls-like Chronos) and continuing the story, Darksiders 3 features the whip-wielding witch you see above, Fury. Being so far out, we don’t know much about it yet – to the point where it seems slightly weird that it has even been announced yet – but it’s got all the stylised monster-slaying you’ll be used to from elsewhere.

Darksiders 3 release date: TBC 2018

Super Meat Boy Forever

Subscribe to PCGamesN on YouTube

Smash indie game hit Super Meat Boy is getting a sequel next year called Super Meat Boy Forever. While Forever debut on Switch we have been promised a PC version. The name refers to the fact that each stage can be played endlessly, but will get harder with each visit. The bright, precisely-designed levels return from the original as you aim to rescue your loved one. This time, though, you’ll play as Nugget, the child of Meat Boy and Bandage Girl.

Super Meat Boy Forever release date: TBC 2018

Left Alive

left alive upcoming pc games

Metal Gear character designer Yoji Shinkawa, Armoured Core director Toshifumi Nabeshima, and Mobile Suit Gundam mech designer Takayuki Yanase are the esteemed names attached to Square Enix’s forthcoming survival action shooter, Left Alive.

It is set in the same universe as the Front Mission games and takes place in version of the 21st century where most of the world powers have been consolidated into supranational blocs, which are inevitably at war with one another. You switch between three characters, each of whom is alone and fighting for their survival in an unknown war-ravaged city. There are gathering and crafting systems, as well as action and stealth gameplay. It all sounds ace, and the artwork brings all sorts of fuzzy feelings from the glory days of PS1-era Metal Gear back.

Left Alive release date:TBC 2018

Insurgency Sandstorm

upcoming games insurgency sandstorm

Sequel to tactical multiplayer FPS Insurgency, Insurgency: Sandstorm looks to take the successful formula a step further: Developer New World Interactive haved ambitions to establish this upcoming game as the indie film of military shooters. The chances of that will certainly be helped by the addition of a single-player campaign, where you play as a female insurgent fighter through the Middle East.

Insurgency: Sandstorm release date: TBC 2018

Tropico 6

Tropico 6 Statue of Liberty

Finally officially revealed at E3, Tropico 6 is just as dastardly dictatorial as the previous entries. This time you can quite literally steal the Statue of Liberty so there are some upgrades to come, too. It’s a while out yet but expect a bit more info as we get closer.

Tropico 6 release date: TBC 2018

The Last Night

The Last Night platformer

One of the prettier games at Microsoft’s conference, cyberpunk platformer The Last Night says it has the “heart of a sci-fi thriller” to go alongside, presumably, moving right and jumping. We haven’t seen any proper gameplay yet, but it’s caught more than a few eyes.

The Last Night release date: TBC 2018

Shenmue 3

Shenmue 3

Well, it’s happening. A massively successful Kickstarter, some amount of Sony money and an almost bottomless pile of hype. They finally admitted the delay in mid-2017, saying late 2018 was now the target. That’s disappointing but some will wait however long they need to.

Shenmue 3 release date: TBC 2018

BioWare’s next project is trying to combine their storytelling acumen and beautiful art with the MMO-lite nature of Destiny. It also lets you be Iron Man, so, there’s that. Honestly there’s a lot to it, so check our dedicated Anthem info article for more.

Anthem release date: Early 2019

Boyfriend Dungeon

Subscribe to PCGamesN on YouTube

With Boyfriend Dungeon, developers Kitfox Games have taken the novelty dating genre to another level of zaniness – and yes, we are including Hatoful Boyfriend in that equation.

It is a dungeon-crawler ‘stroke’ dating sim, in which your character feels desire for the weapons they dispatch their foes with. To fight the waves of enemies coming your way, you will need to woo your weapons and take them on dates. The best weapons probably have higher damage and penetration stats, we surmise.

Boyfriend Dungeon release date: TBC 2019

The Surge 2

upcoming pc games The Surge 2

Plenty of games have imitated the influential Dark Souls since its release in 2011. Labelled ‘Souls-likes’, games like sci-fi action RPG The Surge was one of them, pinching FromSoftware’s diamond-hard difficulty level that rewards players by not holding their hand and trusting their skill and patience.

The Surge was one of the better Souls-likes to emerge and we are pleased to see the game’s dynamic limb-targeting system return in The Surge 2. Deck 13 claim that the sequel will “expand greatly upon the formula” with more ambition and scale featuring in a brand new environment, “a sprawling, devastated city.”

The Surge 2 release date: TBC 2019

Frozen Synapse 2

Upcoming PC games Frozen Synapse 2

After distilling the merits of their turn-based tactical shooter into the purist sports strategy of Frozen Cortex, Mode 7 Games have returned to the Synapse series with a view to expand. They’ll retain the waypoint system that evokes early Rainbow Six, but move the action outside those familiar office complexes in favour of “open world tactics.” However that manifests itself, it’ll be a huge departure from the taut, two-player maps of the original Frozen Synapse.

Frozen Synapse 2 release date: TBC

Guacamelee 2

upcoming games Guacamelee 2

Guacamelee was an excellent Metroidvania wrassle ‘em up, and the platforming sequel is chokeslamming its way onto PC. In Guacamelee 2, the original game’s famous chicken returns, but is complimented by a four-player co-op mode.

Guacamelee 2 release date: “soon-ish”

Spelunky 2

upcoming games Spelunky 2

Paris Games Week 2017 gave us plenty of goodies, but Spelunky 2 is up there with the biggest announcements. Expect more, well, spelunking and randomly-generated levels in this challenging indie game sequel as the now older platforming protagonist has been replaced by his daughter – and her beloved pug, Monty.

Spelunky 2 release date: TBC

Unreal Tournament

Unreal Tournament

Unreal Tournament has been in open development since its earliest stages. As in, since they were still developing weapon models, deciding on movement mechanics, the very groundwork of the game. It’s going to be free and supported by cosmetic microtransactions. They’re still calling it pre-alpha so who knows when it will be out.

Unreal Tournament release date: TBC

God Eater 3

In the God Eater RPG series from Bandai Namco, you wield massive God Arc weapons that function as supernatural swiss army knives that transform between melee and ranged combat forms.

The latest entry to the series, God Eater 3, has been announced, but there are few concrete details about the game so far. Expect more massive weapons and battles with borderline de-ific monsters.

God Eater 3 release date: TBC

Werewolf: The Apocalypse

Werewolf: The Apocalypse release date

Other than this definitely happening we don’t know a whole lot about it. You’ll play a Werewolf and will probably tear stuff up at a high rate. It’s to be the first WOD game since Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines, so a heavy weight is on it to be proper good.

Werewolf: The Apocalypse release date: TBC

Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition

upcoming games neverwinter nights enhanced edition

Many felt that, when Neverwinter Nights came out in 2002, that it was the definitive videogame version of the Dungeons and Dragons pen-and-paper RPG. D&D fans should be pleased to hear that developer Beamdog are not just working on an Enhanced Edition: the wealth of content that the community has produced for the game will be compatible, too.

This new, shiny edition will feature crisper visuals through pixel shaders and lighting and post-processing effects, plus 1080p and 4K support.

Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition release date: TBC

Age of Empires 4

The biggest game announcement of Gamescom 2017 by some distance was Age of Empires 4. It’s being developed by Relic Entertainment – the team behind Dawn of War and Company of Heroes – and you can see more in the announcement trailer above. It was also revealed at the end of the Age of Empires’ Gamescom stream that us lucky folk would be receiving definitive editions of Age of Empires 2 and 3.

Age of Empires 4 release date: TBC

Necromunda: Underhive Wars

Necromunda: Underhive Wars release date

Try not to cheer too loud: those folks behind Mordheim are making the 40k equivalent, Necromunda, and there really isn’t any excuse for it not to be great. Again, not a lot is known about it yet, but we’re primed and ready for a trailer and gameplay details aplenty.

Necromunda: Underhive Wars release date: TBC

Morphies Law

Subscribe to PCGamesN on YouTube

Morphies Law is a bizarrely engaging “robot morphology-driven” shooter. In other words, shooting an opponent means you steal some of their body mass. Precisely where you target on your opponent’s anatomy matters too: if you’re a sniper and you keep nailing those headshots your own head will grow, and if you keep shooting people in the legs your legs grow longer.

This then impacts how you interact with and navigate the environment. For instance, your extended legs will allow you to jump higher and an increased butt mass enables you to use your posterior as a jetpack. We did say it was bizarre.

Morphies Law release date: TBC

World of Warcraft Classic

Subscribe to PCGamesN on YouTube

There are not many details on this nostalgia-driven reimagining, but Blizzard have finally done what fans have been badgering them to do for years: World of Warcraft Classic. That is despite the fact that Blizzard have only just started hiring for it.

All we have to go on for this upcoming game is the beautiful trailer you can see above, but we do know that, according to executive producer J. Allen Brack, Blizzard “want to replicate the game experience.” This, obviously, sounds excellent, but we could do without the grind, thanks.

World of Warcraft Classic release date: TBC

Dead Island 2

Dead Island 2 steam page

This, apparently, still exists and is making “fantastic progress” at take-over developers Sumo, according to an issue of industry magazine MCV. Exactly how much it will resemble the weird Californian sun-pocalypse we saw on display during the original announcement is anyone’s guess.

Dead Island 2 release date: TBC

Magic: The Gathering Arena

upcoming games Magic The Gathering Arena

You’ve probably heard of the famous trading card game Magic: The Gathering. But now we know that Wizards of the Coast will be bringing out Magic: The Gathering Arena after their Twitch stream on September 7. Arena is the first game to come from Wizard of the Coast’s in-house studio, Digital Games Studio.

Wizards say that Arena will focus on “fast-paced, exciting, and easy-to-follow” gameplay and that there will be a beta test initially focusing on casual play featuring cards from the card game’s Ixalan release.

Magic: The Gathering Arena release date: TBC

Ascent: Infinite Realm

upcoming games Ascent: Infinite Realms

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is the smash hit of 2017, turning the notion of battle royale into a genre, and an immensely popular one at that. Now Bluehole are looking to be just as successful in the MMORPG space, with Ascent: Infinite Realm.

This upcoming game is a steampunk take on the genre with elaborate, customisable airships doing battle with gargantuan dragons and massive mechs. Its PvP mode sees players do battle between realms, where “factions fight for fame and glory, taking turns to lead offensive and defensive efforts using all kinds of fantastical flying vehicles.” We are in.

Ascent: Infinite Realms release date: TBC

Hunt: Showdown

Hunt Showdown Crytek

Crytek’s latest has morphed once in its lifetime – going from Hunt: Horrors of the Gilded Age to its current title. It’s a co-op monster hunting game with a creepy aesthetic, creating PvPvE moments of terror, hunting in pairs while trying to avoid each other. If it ever comes out it should be pretty good.

Hunt: Showdown release date: TBC

Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord

Mount and blade 2 bannerlord

The long-awaited followup to the crowd favourite Mount & Blade, the sequel is promising to be bigger and better in pretty much every way. The developers have focused on two areas so far in reveals: humongous siege battles and making the game moddable. With the latter they’re going as far as possible, giving modders as much power as possible to make their game even better.

Mount & Blade 2 release date: TBC

Worlds Adrift

Worlds Adrift

Operating somewhat as a tech demo for MMO tech, Worlds Adrift is about sky pirates and a massive, persistant world. If it works, it could be The Next Big Thing.

Worlds Adrift release date: TBC

Quake Champions

Quake Champions characters

Quake Champions takes some surprising steps away from its roots, while claiming to be as grounded as possible. It’s still going to feature the lightning gun, railgun, and rocket launcher that made Quake 3 one of the world’s first global esports. But it’s also adding character selection, special abilities and, possibly, a free-to-play monetization model. We’ve got a list of all the announced and rumoured Quake Champions characters if you’re after it, and you can sign-up for the open beta right now.

Quake Champions release date: TBC

Galaxy in Turmoil

Galaxy in Turmoil

Here’s a good, or at least reasonable, end to one of the many fan-game turned cease-and-desist stories. Galaxy in Turmoil used to be a fan-made Star Wars Battlefront successor until EA and Disney gave it the “er, actually.” Instead of taking their space-ball and going home, Frontwire Studios decided to keep it up and have got as far as space walks now.

Galaxy in Turmoil release date: TBC

Star Citizen

Upcoming PC games Star Citizen

Without a doubt the most wildly ambitious game in a long time, Star Citizen aims to be the ultimate space exploration experience. Taking to the skies in one of numerous ridiculously detailed craft, you’ll be able to engage in military service, become a reputable trader of goods, live the life of a smuggler, or become a universe-famous race pilot. If it ever gets finished, of course. Squadron 42, the single-player component, is supposed to be out this year. But also last year. Then, in 2017, it din’t come out, once again.

Star Citizen release date: TBC

Death Stranding

Death Stranding release date

Nobody knows what’s going on with Death Stranding. Probably not even Hideo Kojima does. We’re not even sure it’s coming to PC as well as its Sony-funded home, but its showings so far have been as mad as a box of frogs and that just makes us want to tell you about it. The Mads Mikkelsen trailer reinforced this after the initial reveal and honestly we can’t wait for more. Doesn’t even matter if it never comes out.

Death Stranding realease date: TBC

Life is Strange 2

Beyond an extremely short video celebrating incredible sales for the original game, Life is Strange 2 is mostly a mystery. We expect to hear more before the year’s out but it’s almost certainly a 2018 game at best. Chloe and Max are unlikely to return and you can expect more feels right to the face.

Life is Strange 2 release date: TBC

Originally debuting a couple of years back, Eitr went into deep hiding after very positive responses to demo builds to finish up development of this pixelated, isometric Dark Souls.

Eitr release date: TBC

Wild West Online

Famous mostly for getting mistaken for Red Dead Redemption 2 in an early screenshot, Wild West Online promises cowboys, a sandbox, and PvP. The developers haven’t announced release plans beyond that they no longer need Kickstarter or Early Access due to the attention brought by the aforementioned confusion.

Wild West Online release date: TBC

Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077

The next game from those guys who made The Witcher – you might have heard of it. They announced it far, far too early with a teaser trailer and we’ve heard nothing official since. They’re even got a little sick of answering questions about it, it seems, but did get funding for some special city tech recently. Supposedly, it’ll be out before 2019, but who knows.

Cyberpunk 2077 release date: 2077?

Beyond Good & Evil 2

Yes, it’s happening (dot gif) but it’s probably a long, long ways off. According to creator Michel Ancel it’s at “day zero of development” and they’re looking for a lot of community input to get it moving. Yes, somehow, we’ve found a game likely to come out after Cyberpunk 2077. Expect to hear more… at some point.

Beyond Good & Evil 2 release date: Beyond Space And Time, Probably.
